The Karelian Bear Dog — known in Finland as the Karjalankarhukoira — is one of the top ten most common dog breeds in Finland and a national treasure, developed over centuries in the Karelia region spanning the border of Finland and Russia. A powerful, agile, and utterly fearless Nordic spitz-type hunting dog, the Karelian Bear Dog was bred to hunt large and dangerous game — including brown bears, moose, wild boar, and lynx — working independently and using its voice to bay and hold game at bay until the hunter arrives. Its striking black and white coat, compact muscular build, and curled tail are immediately recognizable. The breed is so effective at bear hunting that wildlife management agencies in North America, including the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Yosemite National Park, have used Karelian Bear Dogs in bear aversion programs to safely deter problem bears from human settlements without lethal force.
